چکیده
We report molecular dynamics simulation results for the single particle and collective orientational correlations for Gay–Berne fluid of anisotropy parameters k53 and k855. The following significant results are reported. ~i! The decay of collective orientational relaxation of rank two is found to slow down appreciably while approaching the isotropic–nematic ~I–N! transition. It eventually becomes even slower than the single particle orientational relaxation of rank one. Surprisingly, even the latter shows a marked slowing down near the I–N transition. ~ii! Analysis of the long-time behavior shows a breakdown of the rank dependence predicted by the Debye law in the same region. ~iii! An analysis of the memory functions of the orientational time-correlation functions shows that for the collective relaxation surprisingly approaches a Markovian behavior near the I–N transition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~97!51403-6# LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Optimal Control of Laser Induced Transient Birefringence in Liquid Crystals
Optimal control theory is applied to design a laser pulse to produce an anisotropic change of the refraction index in the vicinity of the isotropic-nematic phase transition in liquid crystals. The laser induced birefringence originates from the orientational anisotropy induced by the laser eld that is enhanced signiicantly due to the excluded volume eeect. The shape of the optimal pulse is anal...
متن کاملEnergy landscape view of phase transitions and slow dynamics in thermotropic liquid crystals.
Thermotropic liquid crystals are known to display rich phase behavior on temperature variation. Although the nematic phase is orientationally ordered but translationally disordered, a smectic phase is characterized by the appearance of a partial translational order in addition to a further increase in orientational order. In an attempt to understand the interplay between orientational and trans...
متن کاملNew divergent dynamics in the isotropic to nematic phase transition of liquid crystals measured with 2D IR vibrational echo spectroscopy.
The isotropic phase of nematogenic liquid crystals has nanometer length scale domains with pseudonematic ordering. As the isotropic to nematic phase transition temperature (TNI) is approached from above, the orientational correlation length, ξ, of the pseudonematic domains grows as (T - T(*))(-1/2), where T(*) is 0.5-1 K below TNI. The orientational relaxation, which is a collective property of...
متن کاملInvestigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals
Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
متن کاملLiquid Crystal Phase Behaviour of Attractive Disc-Like Particles
We employ a generalized van der Waals-Onsager perturbation theory to construct a free energy functional capable of describing the thermodynamic properties and orientational order of the isotropic and nematic phases of attractive disc particles. The model mesogen is a hard (purely repulsive) cylindrical disc particle decorated with an anisotropic square-well attractive potential placed at the ce...
